Approximately 30 children (some of them participants in Mahapach-Taghir’s Learning Community activities, and some of them brothers, sisters and friends of those participants) arrived at the Year Opening “Happening” in Kiryat Shmona Community. It took a place on Thursday, December 3rd, at the Meginim School. A large group of parents also came to the event and enjoyed both participating in the nice, light-hearted event, and relaxing while their children played in the various activity stations. So what was there? There were play stations where children could join such activities as bowling, marksmanship and fishing (a task for children who challenge themselves!); creativity stations – which involved such things as making mobiles from the natural materials (which turned into a jewelry-making activity!), making paper flowers out of egg cartons, designing magnets out of various art materials, and face-painting. In addition, there was a station called “Megama Yeruka” – where the children prepared twigs of spice and tea plants and jars with olives they harvested from the tree near Mahapach-Taghir. The community will open the jars around Purim – in another common event of Mahapach-Taghir and Megama Yeruka. There was a coffee stand “for adults”, although because of last-minute technical problems it contained only raspberry juice and waffles. It is important to mention that the cost of the event was very low, and of course it was taken from last year’s Bazaar. It was created through the efforts of the day coordinators staff and the steering committee, and organized by the very devoted tutors in the Learning Community! Both the organizers and the staff were very pleased with the outcome of the event. Thanks to everybody for such thorough planning that lead to such a success, and special thanks to the Meginim School (especially to Uzi) for letting us use their facilities and equipment.

Two of our activist students in Kiryat Shmona conduct regular activities during the weekly ‘social hour’ class in the Branco Weiss High School. These activities encourage teenagers to become more involved in their surroundings, and have set as their goals to heighten awareness, increase teenage activism and bring about change within the community. As part of these activities, a journalism groups was established that writes a regular column in the local paper ‘News’!
